Pregnancy psychology: what it is and what its fields of application are

The pregnancy It is a stage full of changes, not only for the woman who lives it, but at a general level in the surrounding environment changes are evident during the gestational state. It is the branch of Psychology that is responsible for the study of pregnancy and all associated factors, with the aim of promoting mental and emotional health in the mother from the moment she finds out about her condition until the postpartum stage (that is, the first 6 weeks after birth).

Nowadays, in some countries, such as Colombia, comprehensive care of the pregnant woman is carried out, that is, in addition to her prenatal controls with the gynecologist, she receives counseling from Psychology and Social Work (in some cases). Recognizing that care should be taken that addresses all the spheres in which the pregnant woman develops and that can exert some influence at this stage.

Fields of application

In general they can be 4: perception of pregnancy by the pregnant woman (or woman in a state of pregnancy), role of the father, emotional management and prevention of psychological disorders in pregnancy (and / or postpartum stage).

Regarding the perception of pregnancy by the pregnant woman, it is initially important that the psychology professional enters to inquire how he received the news of his pregnancy, that is, if it is desired or unwanted; which will have different repercussions on the life of the woman and her environment. In addition to this, the future mother must be psychoeducated, that is, explain in a simple way what are the expected changes at the physical level (especially hormonal), psychological and social so that little by little you learn more about your new role; This can be done by treating topics such as: emotional reactions, emotional chronology (that is, the set of changes at the emotional level according to each quarter) and adaptation to new role (ambivalence, introversion and coping with these changes).

Second, psychoeducate the father of the new being that is on its way in its new role, that is, just as the mother must be born psychologically, the father must also do it. This can be done by identifying your perception of pregnancy and the way you are dealing with it, remember that from the mother's womb the father-baby bond begins to be created.
