The production of neurons in our brain or neurogenesis It is the process by which neurons are generated from neural stem cells and occurs during embryonic development, but this process also occurs in parts of our adult brain after birth.
Neurogenesis in adults was first recognized in the 1960s, although it was not studied in depth until the 1990s. Because stem cells can divide and differentiate into many types of cells, their discovery in adult brains suggested that neurogenesis could be the key to treating neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's. Since then, it has been discovered that neurogenesis occurs in the hippocampus of adult humans and in the amygdala.
